AC questions
The top causes are a failed capacitor, a dirty filter or coil, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filter and breakers first. If the outdoor fan is not spinning, shut the system off and call us.
Once a year, in spring before the first heat wave. We clean the outdoor coil, test the capacitor and electrical parts, and check the refrigerant charge.
Refrigerant does not get used up. If it is low, there is a leak. We find and fix the leak first, then charge the system. Topping off without a repair just means another call next summer.
A quick rule: multiply the system's age by the repair cost. Over $5,000, replacing usually makes more sense. Systems on the old R-22 refrigerant are almost always worth replacing when they fail.
Since 2025, new residential systems ship with lower impact refrigerants like R-454B or R-32. Our techs are EPA 608 certified and trained on them.
We run a Manual J load calculation using your square footage, windows, insulation and orientation. A lot of homes here have oversized units that short cycle and leave the house clammy.
